Advena Avis is a musical project founded in the mid-1990s, conceived by Fabio Armani and Marco Carpiceci as an exploration of medieval and early European music reinterpreted through a contemporary, hybrid and “new-age” sensibility.

Rather than aiming at historical reconstruction, Advena Avis approaches medieval material as living matter: melodies, modes and texts become the starting point for a dialogue with modern composition, electronic textures, world music influences and extended arrangements. The result is a sound world suspended between past and future — a “Medieval Future”, as the project itself defines it.

The project’s debut album, Medioevo Futuro (1997), presents a collection of reimagined medieval songs and instrumental pieces, where ancient vocal lines coexist with modern harmonic thinking, subtle electronics and a cinematic sense of space. The album unfolds as a conceptual journey, framed by a prelude and a postlude, emphasizing continuity and transformation rather than individual tracks

With the second album, Da Terre Lontane (2000), Advena Avis expands its sonic and geographical horizon. Medieval European sources are placed in dialogue with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern colors, introducing instruments such as oud, bombarde, oboe, strings and a broader percussive palette. The album deepens the project’s interest in cross-cultural resonance, where distant lands are evoked not as exotic references but as interconnected cultural memories

Throughout its existence, Advena Avis has functioned as a transitional project within the broader ecosystem that would later evolve into Different Lands: a space where historical imagination, spiritual atmosphere and contemporary production techniques could coexist freely. Vocals play a central role, often carrying medieval texts and poetic imagery, while arrangements privilege atmosphere, modality and slow temporal development over rhythmic insistence.

Advena Avis should be understood as a research-oriented and formative project rather than a genre exercise. It represents an early and significant attempt to treat medieval music not as an object of nostalgia, but as a source of transformation, capable of speaking to contemporary sensibilities through sound, texture and silence.

Produced and curated within the cultural framework that would later become Different Lands, Advena Avis remains a foundational chapter in the label’s history: a bridge between historical memory and future-oriented musical exploration.
